Event description

Description

As the dean of freshmen at Stanford University for over a decade, Julie Lythcott-Haims noticed a significant increase in parental involvement in students' lives. Parents were exerting control over academic work, extracurriculars and career choices rather than risking their child's failure or disappointment.

In her presentation based on her New York Times bestseller, How To Raise an Adult, Lythcott-Haims draws on her own insights as a mother and dean to highlight the ways in which over-parenting harms children, their stressed-out parents, and society at large. Julie’s provocative message inspires audiences to examine their behaviors and join the growing movement to allow children to develop the resourcefulness, resilience, and inner determination necessary for success. Her alternative philosophy for raising preteens and teens to self-sufficient young adulthood is one we all can learn from. Check out Julie's Ted Talk for a preview of her insights.

The Manhattan Beach Education Foundation would like to thank Beach Cities Health District and South Bay Families Connected for sharing the importance of Julie Lythcott-Haims' message throughout the South Bay community. Together, we believe in providing educational resources to benefit the social-emotional wellness of our youth and families. Support of these organizations ensures that important opportunities are available to our students and parents.

Thank you for your support!

We encourage you to support our local bookstore, Pages: a bookstore, by purchasing "How to Raise an Adult" on-site or at their store in Manhattan Beach.
