The Ballets Russes Arts Initiative and St. Paul’s Church are pleased to present an afternoon concert by internationally renown clarinetist Julian Milkis with one of the Northeast's most sought after pianists, Sima Kustanovich. The only living student of the iconic Benny Goodman, Julian Milkis has garnered worldwide recognition as a dazzling soloist, classical chamber musician, and jazz clarinetist. He stand out as a true "ctoss-over" artist, and one of the leading praticioners of his instrument.
Perfect for a relaxed Sunday afternoon, the program alternates and juxtaposes Baroque music by classical masters Bach, Busoni, Handel, and Hasse, with jazz compositions by the likes of Dick Hyman, Astor Piazzolla, Ilya Dimov and Alec Templeton. The blending of classical and jazz music is a speciality of Milkis and Kustanovich, who frequently share the stage with such hybrid programs, as well as more traditional performances.
Julian Milkis is a leading voice for his instrument in the field of jazz. One of his recent collaborations was with Benny Goodman’s old band-mate, Dick Hyman, who wrote and dedicated his Ragtime Concerto to Julian, premiered in Helsinki, Finland in the fall of 2012. He also transcribed a number of the King of Swing’s classics for Mr. Milkis, providing a rare insight into the golden era of jazz.
A Canadian citizen, and graduate of The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with the renown Leon Russianoff, Julian Milkis has performed on such prominent stages as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, the Salle Pleyel and Salle Gaveau in Paris, the Great Halls of the Moscow Conservatory and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, and the National Concert Hall in Taipei, Taiwan. He has recorded for Warners' Classic Lontano, the French Suoni e Colori, Sony's Russian CEAUX, and Russian Melodiya and Russian Season.
Sima Kustanovich is one of the Northeast's most sought after pianists. Hailed by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette for the "extraordinary intensity and brilliance of her playing," she has performed in some of the most acclaimed international venues, including France's Courchevel Chamber Music Festival, New York City's BargeMusic, Toronto's Royal Conservatory Chamber Music Series, Niagara on the Lake Music Festival, Summit Festival, Sweden's St. Jacob's Cathedral, Hungary's Matthias Cathedral, Prague’s Hlahol and major cities of Russia, Austria, Italy and Estonia.
Ms Kustanovich is equally at home as a soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with such ensembles as the Borodin String Quartet. She received a Masters in Music from the St. Petersburg Conservatory; she then joined its faculty and accepted a coveted appointment to the famed Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater, working intensively with such luminaries as Mikhail Baryshnikov and Natalia Makarova.
