Description

Judicial Role and Leadership Workshop
Host: State Court Administrative Office - Trial Court Services - Problem Solving Courts
Date: Wednesday, September 26, 2018
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (registration begins at 8:30 a.m.)
Location: Hall of Justice, Lansing, Michigan

Deadline to Register: September 19, 2018

Target Audience:
This training is for problem-solving court judges only and will also include small-group discussion with other judges about realistic, difficult scenarios submitted by attendees.

Background and Purpose:
Research indicates that the role of the judge is a key element in the success of our drug treatment courts. Judge Patrick Bowler will give a presentation to attendees regarding the PSC judge's role and responsibilities-- including leadership of the PSC team, leadership in the community, and the importance of judicial interaction with the participant. The training will also cover important topics such as confidentiality and due process. New research and recent case law makes this training essential for both new and experienced problem-solving court judges.

Is registration required?
Yes. Registration is required and on-site registration is not available.

Do I have to print and bring my registration confirmation to the event?
No. There will be a sign in sheet at the SCAO-PSC registration desk outside of the meeting room.

How do I get there?
The Hall of Justice (HOJ) is located between Ottawa Street on the north, Allegan Street on the south, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. on the west. The HOJ is west of the state capitol building. Please enter the building through the front doors facing the capitol building.

Where do I park?
Parking for people visiting the Hall of Justice is located on Allegan Street (across from the north side of the Michigan Library and Historical Center, southeast of the Hall of Justice, and east of the Veterans Memorial Park). When entering the lot, turn left into the unattended lot and swipe your credit/debit card at the entrance. The system will "time stamp" your entrance time and you may proceed to park in any available spot.

Visitors who will pay with a credit/debit card will simply reswipe the card to calculate their parking time and choose the option to charge it to the card.

Visitors who will pay with a validation (voucher) are those who have attended a Michigan Supreme Court or State Court Administrative Office-sponsored seminar, training, or meeting; they must first reswipe their credit/debit card to calculate their parking time and then choose the option to pay with the validation (voucher). Note that the voucher consists of a QR code on a piece of paper that must be scanned to exit. This QR code is a one-time use only, so you may discard it after you exit.

If Visitor Parking is Full
In the event that the lot is full when you arrive, continue east on Allegan to Pine Street. Turn right (south) on Pine and proceed one block to Kalamazoo Street. Turn right (west) on Kalamazoo and enter the parking lot behind the Michigan Library and Historical Center. The same parking system has been implemented for this lot. The Michigan Library and Historical Center’s physical address is 702 West Kalamazoo Street, Lansing, MI 48915.

The name on the registration doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?
No. Please use the attendee's name only.

What attire do you recommend?
Room temperature can fluctuate throughout the day. Please plan accordingly and dress in layers.

Is food provided?
Lunch will be generously provided to training participants. Additional meals and snacks are the responsibility of the participant. If you require a vegetarian meal or have severe food allergies, please contact Katha Moye at moyek@courts.mi.gov or 517-373-2219.
