Description

The 37th Annual JPMorgan Healthcare Conference is in the books (mostly), and this month's event will bring together five (5) healthcare club members that attended the conference and represent digital health, biotech/pharma, medical device, and venture capital/private equity. They will discuss the highlights and trends they observed from the conference and predict for 2019.

The annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference is the largest and most informative healthcare investment symposium in the industry, bringing together industry leaders, emerging fast-growth companies, innovative technology creators, and members of the investment community. The conference brings in over 9,000 total attendees and over 450 private and public companies.

Bios:

Jeff Ries, Vice President, Healthbox

Jeff is a Vice President at Healthbox where he has focused his efforts on investing in early-stage healthcare IT/service companies on behalf of Intermountain Healthcare. Previously, Jeff was at Oxeon Partners where he built and invested in healthcare companies. He was also an investor at Sandbox Industries where he helped manage BlueCross BlueShield Venture Partners, a $400M+ healthcare fund. While at Sandbox, he started several tech-enabled startups and helped raise capital for Cultivian Sandbox, an agriculture-technology venture fund. Jeff began his career at LaSalle Investment Management, a private equity firm with $50B+ AUM. Jeff currently resides in New York City. He received his BA in Economics from Northwestern University and MBA from Harvard Business School.

Adam Lessler, Principal, Canepa Healthcare

Adam Lessler is a Principal at Canepa Healthcare. Prior to joining Canepa Healthcare, Adam was an engagement manager at McKinsey & Company, where he served clients across the health care value chain, with a focus on provider growth and M&A/partnership strategy. Previously, Adam completed his internship in emergency medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and worked as an analyst in the Investment Banking Division at Goldman Sachs and as a research assistant in Harvard Medical School’s Department of Health Care Policy.

Adam serves as a board observer at bioTheranostics and Magnolia Medical Technologies.

Adam has a B.A. in economics from Amherst College, an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.D. from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Bryan Bui, Principal, Heritage Group

Bryan Bui joined Heritage Group in 2018 and serves as a Principal for the firm. Prior to joining Heritage Group, Bryan was a founding member of Oxeon Ventures, the denovo arm of Oxeon Partners. As a Director, Bryan led in the ideation, development, and creation of tech-enabled service companies focused primarily on the provider system environment. Since 2014, Oxeon Ventures has created three stand alone companies: Risalto Health, Empiric and Docent. Prior to his time within the venture studio, Bryan led strategy and marketing teams at Pfizer where he focused on oncology and vaccination.

Bryan graduated from USC with a B.A. in Business Strategy and attended NYU Stern for his MBA. When he’s not continuing our focus on relationships, you can find him likely on a river, pursuing his lifelong fascination with fly fishing and the rivers of the American West. Bryan and his wife reside in Nashville and are looking forward to pursuing their lifelong goals there – namely, getting a big dog.

Egen Atkinson, Biotechnology Investor, Venrock

Egen Atkinson focuses on biotechnology and pharmaceutical investments in Venrock’s New York office. Prior to joining Venrock, Egen worked at ForSight Vision4 (acquired by Roche), where he helped launch and manage a phase I clinical trial for Age-Related Macular Degeneration. He also consulted on gene therapy pipeline development for Spark Therapeutics (Nasdaq: ONCE) prior to IPO. Egen has designed and/or conducted several nationally-presented clinical research studies at the Scheie Eye Institute, Hospital for Special Surgery, and Retina Institute of Hawaii.

Egen earned his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he graduated Alpha Omega Alpha and received the Spencer Morris Prize, awarded to the top graduating student in the class. He earned his MBA in Healthcare Management from the Wharton School, where he received a Kaiser Fellowship. Egen received his AB in Economics from Harvard University, where he played 4 years of NCAA Division I water polo, served as co-captain, and received the Collegiate Water Polo Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

Parth Desai, NewYork-Presbyterian Ventures

Parth is a Senior Associate at NYP Ventures responsible for supporting New York-Presbyterian's venture investment fund, conducting diligence on potential investments, building strategic partnerships and supporting the hospital's IP portfolio. Prior to joining NYP Ventures, Parth was a health care strategy consultant at Deloitte Consulting developing corporate growth strategies and advising mergers & acquisitions for leading providers, payers and technology companies. Prior to Deloitte, Parth was a health policy analyst for the state of Massachusetts. In this role, he primarily worked with the Patrick administration to manage reform of the pharmaceutical compounding industry, authoring legislation signed into law by Governor Deval Patrick and used by the FDA to model national regulations. Parth earned his B.S. in Biology from Boston College, M.S. in Medicine from Boston University School of Medicine and MPH in Health Management from Boston University School of Public Health.
