Journey to Justice: The Witness of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement

Led by Pastor Jim Melson

A Three-Session Seminar

Martin Luther King, Jr. is a name familiar to nearly every American. The leadership he gave to the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s helped our country to take major steps forward in the journey toward equality and justice for all people. Yet Dr. King was not primarily a civil rights leader or a political figure. First and foremost, he was a minister of the gospel and disciple of Jesus Christ. It is impossible to understand his life and work apart from his Christian faith. This three-session seminar highlights several key campaigns led by Dr. King from the perspective of the faith that was at the heart of his life and of the civil rights movement. We also lift up some other faithful partners on the journey to justice who led civil rights campaigns not directly related to the leadership of Dr. King. Through a combination of worship, presentations, video clips, and group discussion, we reflect on the witnesses of Dr. King and the other partners in the civil rights movement and what that means for our ongoing call to equality and justice for all God’s children. Because the material covered in the three sessions is in chronological order, participants are strongly encouraged to attend all three sessions.

The basic outline of the three sessions is as follows:
