Event description

Description

In this series with expert teacher Regina Stein, you will examine the variety of ways in which the story of Joseph, presented in Genesis 37-50, has been interpreted in post-Biblical Jewish literature (such as the Apocrypha and the Dead Sea Scrolls), by the classical rabbis, as well as by Christians and Muslims. In what ways do their interpretations promote their own agendas? How can a single Biblical character come to be understood in so many different ways? You’ll gain a greater knowledge of the Joseph story and a better understanding of Biblical interpretation. No previous knowledge of the Biblical story of Joseph is required.

Dr. Regina Stein is the Morris Kaplan Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum at Eldridge Street. She has taught for Temple Emanu-El’s Skirball Center for Adult Jewish Learning, the Wexner Heritage Foundation, CLAL, the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel, the Academy for Jewish Religion, and the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. Dr. Stein is formerly the National Director of the Hadassah Leadership Academy.
