Great for adults. As a member of this team, you will help set the stage for the day! Assist with setting up pop-up tents, registration and hospitality tables. Place event day signage, registration and check-in materials in designated areas.

Each year Joppa works with the local homeless community to clean up existing and vacated camps, as well as remote public dumpsites in and around Des Moines.

The Joppa Community Cleanups are a huge undertaking but the results leave volunteers, property owners, city leaders, citizens and the homeless people we serve smiling.

Who: Groups, Families & Individuals

What: Picking up, bagging & carrying garbage to trucks or dumps

It’s the right thing to do!

  SITE CREW VOLUNTEERS
  Morning Shift 9:00-12:00 | Afternoon Shift 1:00-4:00
  Bring: Work gloves, water bottle & 3-mil garbage bags 
  Wear: Long pants, long sleeve shirts and closed toe shoes                 
  Need: Pickup trucks, trailers, wheelbarrows, trash grabbers, trimmers, rakes & shovels

For nine years Joppa volunteers have worked side by side with the homeless to collect, recycle and properly dispose of more than 500,000 lbs of junk, trash, and debris from the community which includes: Occupied Homeless Camps, Abandoned Homeless Camps and Public Dumpsites!

NOTE: Joppa Community Cleanups are conducted entirely by volunteers, with the full cooperation and assistance from our homeless community and in coordination with city officials and the Street Outreach Coalition.

FAQs

Are there minimum age requirements to volunteer for the event?

While Joppa welcomes everyone, the responsibilities of these jobs are best suited for anyone 10 and older. Waivers must be signed by a parent or guardian for anyone under the age of 18.  

What can I bring to the event?

Site Crew Members will be using:  Rakes, shovels, trash grabbers, trimmers, wheelbarrows, pickup trucks, and trailers. If you are volunteering as a Site Crew Member or Site Leader, it will be very helpful if you can bring any of these items!
