Joomla 3 Template Design and Development Workshop
(Saturday, September 13th, 2014 9am - 4:30pm):

This incredible workshop will cover the most important aspects, and principles, of Joomla Design and Development. This fun and informative workshop is designed to guide both the seasoned professional OR Joomla beginner in learning how to build a Joomla website using the best template design tools available.

For Joomla beginners, or students of template design, we will have tutors assisting you with the exercises that will be offered. There is a lot to cover and we will ensure everyone leaves with an abundance of learning no matter their level of expertise. There will be handouts and "cheat sheets" to take with you for further learning after the workshop.

We will cover responsive (mobile & tablet compatible) templates and best practices when developing with a Joomla default or paid-for template. We will also explore the differences between the most popular Joomla template frameworks available; Gantry, T3 and Warp.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • Setting up your online or offline work environment for developing the template and CSS.
  • How to choose a template for a website and matching features with a desired end result.
  • Comparing template frameworks and default Joomla templates.
  • Planning your template design and how the bootstrap oriented grid system effects your choices.
  • Creating wireframes for effective useability, and professional mockups to show client before development.
  • How to build a template from scratch using the Gantry Framework.
  • How to use Bootstrap oriented CSS to get great looking pages, html tables, buttons and more.
  • How to structure your pages and create CSS for highly effective mobile and tablet design and development.
  • Validating your code, testing on all machines using online tools and preparing the site for going live.
  • How to plan and create a template that can be edited by a client or person who does not know Joomla.
  • A look into the future of Joomla templates and what is on the horizon as Joomla 3 develops.

For this workshop people can work on a site that is in process or install one on the day of the workshop. We will have installations for you online if needed or show you how to install a local computer version of Joomla on your own computer.

Workshop Schedule:

9:00-9:30 Registration, Coffee, and Setup

9:30-10:30 Joomla Templates and Frameworks Overview:
We will cover what the options are for creating your template or buying a template that will be good for your project. We will go in depth into available frameworks and what the differences are when developing a responsive website. The exploration will also cover how font libraries and bootstrap CSS will come into play.

10:30 - 11:00 Setting up your Development Environment:
We will setup the environment and prepare to work using a variety of online or offline tools.

11:00 - 11:30 Delving into the Code & Settings:
The code and settings of a variety of templates will be examined to give an understanding of how templates are structured and how they can be customized.

11:30 - 12:00 Wireframes and Mockups:
We will use software and "tools of the trade" to create effective wireframes using a 12 and 16 grid system. We will then dive into creating mockups using Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Fireworks.

12:00 - 1:30 Lunch and Computer History Museum:
We will have a catered lunch and then explore the incredible Computer History Museum. The museum is a fun, informative and inspiring place to be! You will have time to see the things that interest you most, or just stroll through and see the exhibits at your own pace.

1:30 - 3:00 Template Build with Matt Simonsen and David Beuving of Khoza Technology:
We will dive into developing a Gantry template from scratch ( http://demo.gantry-framework.org/) using best practices and getting the most out of this popular template framework. You will then learn how the Gantry principles can be applied to a vendor-supplied template (from RocketTheme).

3:00 - 3:30 Template Design Showcase:
We will show specific examples of recent Joomla Template Designs and how they were built using the development principles learned in this workshop. This will include how font libraries and Bootstrap oriented design snippits were used, and lead to how overrides were created to ensure one-click updates for the client or webmaster when the site was finished.

3:00 - 4:30 Mobile / Tablet Principles and Template Performance:
We will be exploring how to design a responsive template using Joomla default code and CSS from various template frameworks. To get desired performance results (site load time etc.) we will explore how to use Less for compression of your CSS and other ways to get great website performance using your Template and the Joomla system.

We will be meeting in the Boole Room at the Computer History Museum. It is easy to find and signs will guide you once at the Museum.

Lunch will be provided along with drinks. All of this is included with the cost. We will not have food in the morning, only coffee and water, so grab something before you arrive. Or there is a cafe in the Museum where you can grab a bite.

Parking is easy and free in the Computer History Museum Parking lot. We will send attendees more info about parking prior to the event. Do you or someone you know need financial help to attend this workshop? We will have some scholarships available.
