Event description

Description

For this second meetup of our new, ongoing series on democracy, we will discuss the widely-anthologized essay "The Market and the Forum: Three Varieties of Political Theory" by Jon Elster, a professor of philosophy at Columbia University. The essay describes and criticizes three views of democratic politics. The first view sees voting as a mechanism for aggregating given preferences, the second view does not take preferences as given, but as transformed by public discussion, and the third view takes political activity as justified in terms of the beneficial effects it has on the participants. The focus of the essay is on the key weaknesses in the structure of each of these views.

Jon Elster is a prominent political philosopher at Columbia University, whose work is characterized by attempts to use analytical theories, especially rational choice theory, as a springboard for philosophical and ethical analysis, with numerous examples from literature and history.
