About this event

Join us for the Middlesbrough World Suicide Prevention Day Conference (MWSPDC) at Teesside University Students' Union!

September 10 marks World Suicide Prevention Day. In a lifetime 1 in 5 people have suicidal thoughts, 1 in 14 people self-harm and 1 in 15 people attempt suicide. In 2023 alone, over 6,000 people took their own life in England and Wales. Despite this, stigma still exists, many wouldn’t know what to do if someone close to them began experiencing suicidal thoughts and many struggle to open up about the difficulties they are experiencing.

Support For Us, a charity being launched to provide training and resources around young people’s mental health, are holding a conference in Middlesbrough to raise awareness of suicide and to get people talking.

Talks include:

  • Mental health in South Asian communities (Zulaikha Zeb, assistant psychologist)
  • Understanding male suicide (Kevin McMullan, ManHealth CIC)
  • Autism, suicidality and co-created care (Meryem Cetinkaya, Here to Help)
  • An intoduction to Andy's Man Club (Craig Simcox, lead facilitator)
  • Searching for the light at the end of the tunnel (Sam Layton, Support For Us)

Full itinerary and times will be available on August 10th.

What will the event entail?

MWSPDC will host a variety of talks, covering a variety of topic. Hearing from those with lived experience of suicide, you will hear first hand how it impacted them and what helped. I would be interested in having a stall at MWSPDC

If you offer services within Teesside, having a stall is a great way for attendees to find out more about what you have available. If you would be interested in having a table to advertise the services you offer, please email info@supportforus.co.uk.
