Join the Game: Turning Your Skills into a Gaming Career with Delyth Thomas and James Dodd
Tue 18 Nov 13:00 - 14:00
Hosted by Clare Fisher
The UK’s video game industry is valued at £12 billion, with 38.2 million games sold in 2023, and analysis shows that by 2027 the number of online gamers is set to increase to 11.5 million people. It’s an area of huge creative drive and the skills needed to work in it are broad and varied.
What are key transferable skills that TV freelancers can bring should they wish to get into video games?
We’ll be discussing this and much more with drama director Delyth Thomas, and Director of Out Games James Dodd. We’ll be asking about their backgrounds, how their careers have progressed, and how that has led to their work in video games.
Is pivoting into video games a realistic move and what kind of jobs are available? Don’t expect it to be simple - like many creative industries there are cuts being made and belts being tightened. What are the pressures? Are they like TV – ie budget constraints, client involvement and shorter schedules?
Delyth and James will also talk about this and their on-going commitment to make their areas of work fairer and safer. Delyth’s Call It! App is now widely used across the UK and James’ work, creating a more inclusive and diverse gaming landscape is key to good mental health, employee retention and longevity in the gaming industry. Like in TV, it is an important discussion.
This will be a fast-paced fact filled talk with Delyth and James, and with great advice on how you could potentially pivot from TV into the gaming industry. So please come and join us.
