Event description

Description

World class guitarist John Stowell is known internationally as a musician with a unique sound supported by a sophisticated harmonic concept. Stowell is known for holding his guitar in a diagonal position facilitating playing close, piano-like voicings. With over 30+ recordings as a leader or sideman Stowell has also shared the stage with some of the most respected musicians and singers in the world including Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton, Paul Horn, Art Farmer, Mundell Lowe, and countless more. Herb Ellis, one of the most influential jazz guitarists, was quoted, “More guitarists would play like John Stowell if they knew how.”

In 1976 Stowell formed a duo with bassist David Friesen recording and touring internationally for seven years. Their album Through the Listening Glass was chosen

one of the “Ten Best Jazz Albums of the Decade” by the Los Angeles Examiner. Stowell teaches all over the word as an artist-in-residence at schools in Germany, Indonesia, Argentina, Canada and the USA. He has several educational books and videos including, Jazz Guitar Mastery and Modern Chord Melody.

Stowell will be joined by vocalist and educator Ellen Johnson described by Jazz Journal International as “superior jazz singing by an artist of the highest quality.” Johnson has performed with many fine musicians including Charles McPherson, Louie Bellson, Bobby McFerrin, Sheila Jordan, and Don Braden. Stowell and Johnson have been making music together for more than 30 years and in 2015 recorded Form & Formless creating spontaneous improvisations. Both musicians believe the basis of innovation is the ability to create something out of nothing transforming the music into their own vision. Jazz Times wrote, “When it comes to shaping wordless gems, Johnson packs as imaginative a wallop as the mighty Bobby McFerrin.”
