WHAT:

The John Lee Hooker Foundation is proud to partner with the Chapel of the Chimes, Oakland Unified School District, City of Oakland and The West Coast Blues Society to present, "Centennial of The Blues" honoring the legacy of John Lee Hooker.

EVENT DETAILS:

This event will be the introduction of the John Lee Hooker Foundation blues in school. The first school chosen will be Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary located in Oakland. The program will teach the children the rich history of the Blues, how to play instruments, write songs, and how it all ties back to the music they listen to today which has roots in the Blues.

DATE / TIME / LOCATION

The event will be August 19th, 2017 at the Chapel of the Chime, 4499 Piedmont Ave, Oakland, Ca 94611.

1 p.m. to 3 p.m. – open to the community. The event will start at 1:00 p.m. with a public viewing of the place where the legendary blues John Lee Hooker was laid to rest June 21, 2001. This will be a time where the public can view the area and take pictures next to his site. There will be music and members of his family to share stories with his fans.

3 p.m. to 6 p.m. – ticketed guests only. At 3:00 p.m. will be the beginning of the paid part of the program ($50 in advance / $55 at the door), which will feature his family members, the mayor of Oakland Libby Schaaf, a Blues Historian, a silent auction to include a Epiphone Guitar, and of course the Blues! (Limited space available for 175 attendees; we anticipate the event will sell out so please purchase tickets in advance to ensure your spot).

BACKGROUND:

John Lee Hooker was a proponent of sharing his love for the music; he believed that young people needed to know history and the significance of the Blues. Before he passed in 2001 he started to work on the foundation, and we continued to work towards getting the foundation up and running.

In 2002 the John Lee Hooker Foundation was started and has funded smaller foundations with their projects throughout the years. Now we have an opportunity with Centennial Celebration to roll out our own blues in schools program where the kids will learn history, play instruments, and have a better understanding of what makes the blues the special music that it is. The program will work in conjunction with the music department to create a curriculum that will expand on the current music program or create program in schools that don't currently have one. The program will partner with the blue society to have local musicians come in, talk to the children and give performances that bring the blues to life. We will be partnering with Epiphone to get the instruments for children to bring the music to life.

FUNDRAISING GOAL:

Our goal is to raise awareness while honoring what would have been his 100th birthday. We want to bring this to more schools by mid-2018. For all the blues lovers in the Bay Area we would like you to come out and support the John Lee Hooker Foundation and spread the word about we will be doing in Oakland public school to keep the Blues Alive!
