Event description

Description

Morning Session:

New York State health care facilities should provide a safe and appropriate discharge plan for their patients. Many NYC Health and Hospitals patients have little or no support and economic resources are often inadequate. Discharge can be stymied by an inability to find a setting that meets patient needs. Or, patients may decline offered placement. How can ethics consultants and providers reason through these ethical dilemmas and create action plans based on the soundest ethical reasoning possible?Through case presentation, audience response and expert panel discussion, the ethical issues of discharge planning will be explored.

Afternoon Session:

Clincians throughout NYC Health and Hospitals provide medical, health and social care-giving for persons with varying degrees of gender dysphoria or gender non-conformity. The ethical issues of respect for autonomy (in both medical and family contexts), right to treatment, paternalism and the benefits and burdens of treatment present differently with different patients at different ages. Presentations by consumers and medical experts will explore ethical issues for transgender patients as a means of better preparing staff to meet the needs of this diverse group.
