John Calvin Abney

John Calvin Abney is a folksinger and multi instrumentalist currently based in Austin, TX, touring in support of his new album “Tourist”, out on August 5 via Black Mesa Records.

Thematically, it’s the natural progression—or unraveling—of Abney’s long search for the meaning of home and our impermanence, the crowning voice of a three-part harmony that includes 2019’s Safe Passage and 2020’s Familiar Ground, which netted kind words from, No Depression, and American Songwriter.

Abney is rarely not on the road, maintaining a grueling tour schedule as a solo artist and sideman whose credits include years accompanying and recording with John Moreland and Samantha Crain, recent dates with up-and-comers Lizzie No and Margo Cilker, a solo performance at the Ryman Auditorium, and opening—with a full rock band in tow—a home state show for Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit.

“I know better now…traveled awhile, my defenses down,” he sings on “Call Me Achilles. “Under my skin, into my sound.” Tourist is, at its core, a series of landscape paintings colored by casual intimacy, inviting you in with postcard panoramas of one’s relationships with places changing in time.
