Event Details

This is an extension photo tour to the East Java-Bali Photo Tour ( It's only open to participants in the Java-Bali Photo Tour, so register there first before registering here.  This tour takes particapants around Borobudur & Jogjakarta, Central Java—the world capital of batik fabric production. This tour will include a sunrise on Borobudur temple—Buddhism’s largest ancient shrine, plus a morning village bicycle tour that will take us to a hilltop where we’ll see a second sunrise over Borobudur, it’s surrounding plain and active Mount Merapi’s smoking cone in the background.

We’ll move to the Jogjakarta area to photograph one of the few remaining batik stamp makers—a national treasure, then expert batik artists making both stamped & hand drawn batik. We also have a sunset visit to Prambanan Hindu temple—which for hundreds of years was one of the tallest man-made structures in SE Asia.

See the specific itinerary for this extension click here & scroll down to Sunday, 22 September onward.  You won't want to miss out on this icing in the cake add-on!

Dave Ray is a cultural & world photographer based in Penang, Malaysia.  He's an interculturalist, former lecturer and community development practitioner. He and his wife have seventeen years of experience living on the ground in Indonesia and five years in Malaysia. Through those years he's been photographing the people & cultures of SE Asia for organizations that employed him.

Dave loves meeting people from different backgrounds, hearing their stories, perceiving how to communicate clearly between cultures, creating compelling people images, and telling their stories to those outside their context. He also gets stoked with language and culture learning, and enjoying the outdoors via cycling, kayaking, hiking and volcano bagging. After seventeen years of teaching and networking humanitarian aid in SE Asia, Dave moved into pro-photography.

His tours are custom-made from the bottom up for photographers--not run-of-the-mill bus tours relabeled as photo tours. He knows these places and people well, and can help you gain access &andunderstanding like few others. You won't find any other Western pro photographer who has as much knowledge and experience in the Indo-Malay world.
