About the Play

theater simple is offering its critically acclaimed, award-winning production of Wallace Shawn's gripping monologue, The Fever, as a private performance in our home, benefitting Square Peg Foundation. This evocative performance brings back the intimacy and depth of Wallace Shawn’s original private performances in NYC.

I'm traveling, and I wake up suddenly in the silence before dawn in a strange hotel room in a poor country where my language isn't spoken, and I'm shaking and shivering. Why?
> ~ The Fever

Riding a mental merry-go-round as she becomes deliriously ill, the blistering monologue occurs during a "small" civil war outside the narrator's third-world hotel. As her fever rages, so does she, veering wildly from middle-class guilt to revolutionary fervor to cold pragmatism, with compassion, a dollop of humor, and ruthless self-scrutiny.

What gives us the right to be better off than the poor? How can we enjoy the privileges of a comfortable life in a Western democracy when these advantages owe so much to the misery of the exploited in repressive regimes? Why do we insist on demanding more of the best for ourselves and our children when other people have next to nothing? These questions, which a lot of us spend our lives trying to ignore, are implacably raised in Wallace Shawn’s unsparing 100-minute monologue...
...The Fever is not a wallowing in liberal guilt but a shrewd analysis of why such guilt is not enough. ...The Fever, in the final analysis, is reminiscent of /King Lear/ rather than a Marxist sermon.
- The Independent

5 STARS! ... The most skillful, deeply ruminative piece you'll see … gripping, exhilarating and exhausting... a scintillating 90-minutes of thought-provoking questions”
- Edmonton Journal/(Canada)
