MIDTOWN VANGUARD JAZZ SERIES at CLARA PROUDLY PRESENTS:

THE JOE MAZZAFERRO BIG BAND

ABOUT THE MUSIC

Sacramento-based Trumpeter, Educator, and Composer Joe Mazzaferro debuts his Big Band at the CLARA Auditorium on Sunday, August 11! The band is comprised of some top and up-and-coming musicians from throughout Northern California and features arrangements EXCLUSIVELY written by Joe himself. The band’s repertoire includes re-imaginations of jazz standards as well as arrangements of original compositions by Mazzaferro, Patrick Langham, Steve Homan, Carl Allen, and many more! This show will be recorded as part of a publication launch of Joe Mazz Music (ASCAP) that will take place starting in September 2019 and will include all arrangements featured from this performance.



ABOUT JOE MAZZAFERRO

Sacramento-based Trumpeter, Educator, and Composer Joe Mazzaferro is active in the Northern California jazz scene and has performed with many jazz greats, including Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride, Wycliffe Gordon, Gunther Schuller, and Lewis Nash at such legendary venues as the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Brubeck Festival, Yoshi’s Jazz Club, and Fantasy Studios. His debut album In Terms Of… (Joe Mazz Music) which features Jeff Clayton, Carl Allen, and Donald Brown peaked at #43 on the JazzWeek Charts and has been described as “vintage hard bop with maturity” (George Harris, Jazz Weekly). Currently, Mazzaferro is the Coordinator of Jazz Studies at California State University, Stanislaus as well the Executive Director/Co-Founder of the Sacramento Jazz Orchestra and a member of the Capital Jazz Project.

The term “Vanguard,” represents a group of people leading the way in new developments or ideas. The Music presented at MVJ reflects these legends and this concept.

It is very essential for the continuation and sustainability of Sac Prep Music Academy’s efforts towards maintaining MVJ as the Artist Series it is intended to be.
