Description

Study the fundamentals of Jo staff handling using the wooden 50" jo stick.*

Introduction on Tue., Oct. 30 (follow up class series available, see details below)

Benefits of practice:

Calm, resilience, easy breathing, self-awareness, fortitude, perseverance, reduced stress, improved focus, balance, proprioception, cognition, patience, self-efficacy.

During this class participants will mindfully learn how to:

  • Hold and wield the jo (wooden staff)
  • Execute motions relative to the center line of the body
  • Move the feet, legs and hips so that the lower body supports the motions of the spine, shoulders and arms.
  • Breathe intentionally with the movements
  • Attentively collect eye motion to align vision with intention
  • Develop functional footwork unleashing the power and elegance of the weapon forms.

By learning these skills we:

  • Make good use of the ground so that gravity becomes a friendly force and powerful movement flows effortlessly
  • Enable the bones to transmit power cleanly so that the muscles can work efficiently
  • Educate the left and right halves of the body to coordinate around a central axis
  • Allow the ribs to expand and contract in sync with the rise and fall of the breath
  • Allow the eyes to settle and align with one’s intention
  • Improve balance so that dynamic stability is realized

“Being centered” and “moving from center” will shift from abstract concepts to tangible experiences. Through this format of embodied learning, participants are able to integrate self-awareness, self-regulation, compassion and patience.

* If you do not have your own jo staff you may borrow one from the school during class time. If you would like to buy your own, they are available for purchase through us. Footwork patterns include pivoting, sliding and stepping forward and backward. No falling is required in this class.
