The historic Sutler was originally opened in 1976 by country radio personality Johnny Potts. Part venue, part restaurant, and part dive bar, the Sutler was a social hub for locals and the Nashville music community, as well as a waypoint for travelers and touring acts from far and wide. The Sutler played host to countless musicians, artists, and acts in its lifetime, including Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Garth Brooks, Steve Earle, Don Everly, Buzz Cason, Emmylou Harris and Johnny Cash. The Sutler’s original location opened in the same historic Melrose theater building where it stands today.
Since it was reopened and reimagined in 2014 by restaurateur Austin Ray and the building’s developer and restorer, Joe Parkes Jr., The Sutler has quickly become part of Nashville’s current music scene with appearances on stage by Keith Urban, Luke Bryan, Dierks Bentley, Brett Eldredge, Cole Swindell, Florida Georgia Line and many more. The Sutler’s stage has played host to a variety of local and national acts, including an appearance on the hit TV show Nashville. Native Nashvillians Ray and Parkes were former patrons of the original Sutler and brought it back to life as part of a massive arts, dining and urban living revival of the Melrose neighborhood and the 8th Avenue corridor.
