Event description

Description

Jimmy Burns is an American soul blues and electric blues guitarist, singer and songwriter.

Burns was born in Dublin, Mississippi and raised on the Hilliard Cotton Plantation where he learned to play one-string and 12-string guitar. He was the youngest of eleven children. Recording mostly solo in the 1960s, Burns issued singles for the USA, Minit, Tip Top and Erica labels. He toured the Midwest with his backing group, the Fantastic Epics, and with another outfit called Jimmy Burns and the Gas Company into the early 1970s. Burn's 1972 single, "I Really Love You" was named in the top 500 singles of Northern soul in 2000, and it is sought by collectors.

After a hiatus, he started a long residency at Chicago's Smokedaddy Club in the 90s. It was there that Delmark Records boss Bob Koester first heard Burns perform, and agreed to record him after hearing only one set of music. His debut album for Delmark in 1996, Leaving Here Walking, was produced by Scott Dirks, and was awarded the 'Best Blues Record of the Year' title by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors, and received two W.C. Handy Award nominations. Burns then began touring internationally.

On the 21st, Jimmy will join forces with drummer, Jim Sturdevant, bassist Earl Iving and guitarist Laith Wardi.

Sturdevant is a graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music. He was an active gigging musician in the Boston area for over 20 years, playing with national acts like The Vex, Flight 505, Jah Spirit, James Montgomery, Johnny Hoy the Blue Fish, Heavy Metal Horns, K.D. Bell and Entrain among others. He currently resides in Northwest PA and performs regularly with the band, DangerBird.

Irving was also active in the Boston Music scene—playing with a number of blues and rock bands in the area for two decades. He and Sturdevant played together frequently while in Bean Town. Earl is the founder of Buffalo New York’s Heavenly Chillbillies. The Chillbillies play a unique mix of blues, rockabilly and country. They are the house band the Buffalo’s Annual National Wing Festival. Earl has logged over 600 shows with the Chillbillies since forming the band in 2008.

Guitarist, Laith Wardi has musical roots dating back to the 1980s when he and Sturdevant played with various rock bands throughout Western NY and NW Pennsylvania. He and Sturdevant reconnected in 2008 and formed DangerBird. DangerBird is a three-piece blues & rock band that performs regularly across the Erie region. This year they will appear at mainstay outdoor events like Oil Heritage Festival Bike N’ Brew Festival, Beer on the Bay, and North East Wine Fest, among others.
