Music supervisors, label creatives, and licensing professionals discuss the collaborative process of pitching and placing music into visual media (such as film, TV, advertisements, video games, etc.) as well as the value a sync can bring to a specific project or to a musician's career.
WHAT IS A MUSIC SUPERVISOR?
The job of a music supervisor involves the possession of a comprehensive knowledge of how music impacts the visual medium. A music supervisor must effectively communicate and coordinate with directors, producers, record labels, music publishers and artist managers/agents to place the perfect musical composition that will express or enhance the emotion of a given scene, as well as secure the rights to to such works within the production budget. Music supervision combines creative, technical and management expertise into all stages of development, pre-production, post-production, delivery and marketing.
WHAT IS MUSIC SYNCHRONIZATION?
A music synchronization license, or "sync" for short, is a music license granted by the holder of the copyright of a particular composition, allowing the licensee to synchronize ("sync") music with some kind of visual media output.
