Class Description:

Have you taken some classes in jewelry-making and feel almost ready to start out on your own projects, but still uncomfortable working by yourself? Want an expert's opinion to help when you reach a project snag? Want to practice soldering drills? Join Ilana Krepchin for Directed Open Studios at Artisan's Asylum on Monday mornings! Each week, students will work on projects of their own choice. With personalized attention, students will be guided into problem solving, tackling more complex design, soldering solutions and introduction to different tooling. Instructor will have projects to suggest for folks who may need ideas.

Class Goals:

Students will proceed swiftly and successfully through independent projects with the help of expert guidance, and gain enough further knowledge of the tools around them in order to be confident working independently in the Artisan's Asylum jewelry studio (or in their own).

Prerequisites:

Jewelry 101 at Artisans Asylum or contact the instructor describing your past experience. This is not a beginner's class: students will be expected to have some level of comfort working on their own with the equipment toward project goals.

Students must be at least 18 years of age.

Materials:

Students are expected to provide materials (metal wiring, sheets, solder) for their selected projects - small amounts of non-precious metals (brass, copper) can be provided for no charge for students just wanting to practice basic skills. Teacher will have some materials available for purchase a-la-carte. Contact instructor if you have any questions.

Class Minimum: This class will not run with fewer than 3 students.

Instructor Biography:

Ilana Krepchin has a BA from Hampshire college in Photography and Anthropology, and extensive training in jewelry making from a number of venues including the Decordova Museum. Post-college she worked as the Associate Director of a small non-profit arts collaborative, running teen photography programs. During that period, she took a lot of jewelry making classes at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education and Metalwerx. When she left that job, she immersed herself in the world of jewelry production and craft shows. She worked for many years as a studio manager and production assistant for an established jeweler; and then went out on her own, joining Artisan's Asylum as a member.
