Event description

Description

The story of the so-called Pendle witches, who were hanged at Lancaster in 1612, has formed the basis of many a novel and academic thesis over the years and given the Pendle Hill area the reputation of something of ‘a dark corner.’

For me Pendle was home. Our house at Hill Foot Farm had been in the family for hundreds of years, ever since the time of the early Quakers, from whom we were descended on my mother’s side. My childhood memories formed the basis of my memoir ‘Nowhere better than home,’ 2012 and the house inspired my family history book ‘Whipps, Watsons and Bulcocks: a Pendle family history, 1560-1960,’ 2016.

Pendle was the place I always returned to after hitch-hiking around Europe, teaching English in Libya, Spain, Mexico and finally London or travelling in North Africa, the Middle East and South America. Eventually it drew me back for good. Today when I drive over the tops from Barley, down past Annel Cross and the Quaker Cemetery and down into Twiston, the view still takes my breath away. It has inspired many of the poems in this collection.
