ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

Thursday, November 9

Drawing from her compelling memoir, The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls will share anecdotes from her childhood and from throughout her life, demonstrating that we all have more in common than we think and that our flaws can be our greatest assets. With a powerful message of confronting your past and facing your fears that resonates with audiences everywhere, her story of triumph makes audiences walk away with a positive attitude toward the "demons" in their lives.

In August 2017, her inspiring story hit the big screen in a highly anticipated major motion picture starring Brie Larson.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette's brilliant and charismatic father captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn't want the responsibility of raising a family.

The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.

Truly astonishing, this memoir is permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family.

The book was named one of the "Top 10 Books of the Decade" by Amazon, and has won numerous awards including the Christopher Award, the American Library Association's Alex Award, and the Books for Better Living Award.
