Description

This 3-day trip will provide participants an in-depth opportunity to learn about Mass Incarceration and Civil Rights. The centerpiece of the trip is a full day in Montgomery, Alabama, to explore the Equal Justice Institute's Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration, and its National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Participants will return prepared to support legislative advocacy initiatives in Missouri and beyond.

Day One: Depart from St. Louis by coach bus in the early morning. Our fist stop will be Memphis, TN for lunch and to visit the National Civil Rights Museum. End the day at hotel in Montgomery, AL

Day Two: Begin day at the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration. Meet with the staff of the Equal Justice Institute, founded by Bryan Stevenson, and learn about their advocacy work. Visit the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, sometimes referred to as the Lynching Memorial.

Day Three: Depart Montgomery for Birmingham, AL to visit Kelly Ingram Park and the 16th Street Baptist Church and learn about the City's criminal justice initiative. Stop in Nashville, TN for a late lunch, and return to St. Louis in the evening.

The cost of the trip is $450 single occupany/$350 double occupancy, which includes bus transportation, two hotel nights, museum admissions and some meals.

This trip is highly subsidzed in part by the Staenberg Family Foundation Anything Grant.
