SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION GUIDELINES 2020: Jazz Unlimited of Greater Milwaukee offers scholarships to deserving High School and Pre-High School jazz musicians. Musicians MUST Be in High School or Pre-High School in the year the Competition is held. The following scholarships will be awarded on the Third Sunday in March each year. Auditions begin promptly at 1 PM at Cascio Music. Entry Deadline is the Second Friday in March. Exceptions must be approved by the Scholarship Chair after conferring with the Board.

Awards:

  • 1 - $1,000 Douglas M. and Eleanor M. Gmoser Best Reed Player Award - High School or Pre-High School Students
  • 1 - $1,000 Wayne “Zim” Zimmermann Showmanship Award - High School or Pre-High School Students
  • 3 - $500 Best Instrumentalist Awards - High School or Pre-High School Students
  • 1 - $500 Best Jazz Vocalist Award - High School or Pre-High School Students
  • 1 - $500 Most Unique & Original Vocalist Award - High School or Pre-High School Students
  • 1 - $350 “Taps for VETERANS” Bill Seaman Best Horn Player Award - High School or Pre-High School Students
  • 2 - $250 CP Youth Scholarships for 15 year old and younger Jazz Students ONLY.

Each Applicant may be eligible for multiple awards. A Vocalist that plays an Instrument and is 15 years old or younger in the year of the Competition may be eligible for awards in all categories. A pure Vocalist is eligible for Both Vocal Awards and may be eligible for the CP Youth Award. A Reed Player is eligible for the Reed Player, Showmanship, Best Instrumentalist and possibly the CP Youth Awards. All applicants are eligible for the Showmanship Award. Applicants may play more than one type of Instrument. In order for an Applicant to win in more than one category, they should clearly “Dominate” in all categories won. The Judges’ decision is Final as applicable to Awards given to the Applicants. RESTRICTIONS: To be eligible for the Best Reed Player Award, the Applicant MUST perform Both songs with a Reed Instrument. This Does NOT include the general Woodwind Group, (IE. Flute, Piccolo, etc.) To be eligible for the Best Horn Player, the Applicant MUST perform Both songs with a Trumpet or Flugelhorn. (If there are No Trumpet or Flugelhorn Players, the Judges have the Option to allow any Brass Instrument eligibility for this award). To be eligible for the CP Youth Award, the Applicant MUST be 15 years old or younger in the year of the Competition.NOTE! The scholarship amounts, numbers of scholarships and categories may vary from year to year! This information will be indicated each year on the Scholarship Page. Each year the Board will review the option of issuing “Participation Awards”, Plaques, or other Awards.In the event a category has NO Entrants or a category has Less Entrants than the total number of awards, that Money will be distributed to another Organization, Individual or Cause to be determined by a Majority Vote of the Board.

Original music pieces are NOT Allowed. A CD player will be furnished to play WAV songs and a Laptop to play digital recordings, (WAV, MP3, MP4). Use of CELL PHONES for accompaniment is NOT Allowed! Applicants May NOT use the Judges or Internet Sources for accompaniment. Songs Must be a Minimum of 2 Minutes But NO Longer than 4 Minutes. Songs longer than 4 Minutes will be faded out at 4 Minutes. Each Applicant will perform 2 songs. The Applicant’s “Performance Order” will be determined by a random drawing prior to the competition. Initially, the Category of Instrument will be drawn, then, the Order of the Performer within each Category will be determined. All Applicants MUST arrive no later than 15 Minutes Before the Scheduled Start of the Competition. Applicants will be informed of the “Performance Order” at this time or earlier if possible. Applicants will also be afforded a 30 Second “Warm-up” to set sound levels, patches, etc. which is NOT part of the Competition. Applicants are encouraged to remain until the end of the Competition to receive their award. While Jazz Unlimited hopes that winners will use the Awards to further their Jazz Interests, a check will be issued to all winners at the Conclusion of the Competition, or within a reasonable time by Jazz Unlimited. This will be hand written by the President and/or Vice-President. The check will have a VOID Date of 90 Days after issuance. Jazz Unlimited has NO Obligation to reissue a Check NOT cashed within this 90 Day period. Exceptions to this must be approved by the Scholarship Chair after conferring with the Board. Winners of the various categories will be invited to perform at the April JAZZ JAM on the 4th Sunday. Each year the Board will review the option of issuing “Participation Awards”, Plaques, or other Awards.
