Jazz from New Orleans To New York with the Dan Miller – Jeff Rupert Quintet

Join trumpeter Dan Miller and saxophonist Jeff Rupert as they celebrate the exciting and swinging history of jazz music from its birthplace in New Orleans to the modern sounds of New York City. Dan Miller built his reputation touring and recording with Harry Connick Jr., Wynton Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman and Tom Jones. Jeff Rupert toured and recorded with Mel Torme, Benny Carter, Maynard Ferguson, Sam Rivers and has been the Director of Jazz Studies at the University on Central Florida in Orlando for over 20 years.

You are invited on a musical journey that spans over fifty years of jazz music. We begin in the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans with the genius who created it all, Louis Armstrong. From there we will hear the music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. A free-wheeling excursion from traditional New Orleans jazz to swing to bebop and beyond!

For this concert, Dan brings together a tremendous group of musicians for an evening of hard swinging, acoustic jazz music including pianist Jerry Stawski, bassist Don Mopsick and drummer Tony Vigilante.

Jazz trumpeter Dan Miller, grew up in the vibrant musical scene of Chicago during the 1980’s. He attended the University of North Texas and moved to New York City in 1991. He has studied with Don Jacoby, Bobby Shew, John Haynie, Ed Treutel, Brad Goode and Barry Harris. He spent eleven years (1990 – 2000) as a member of the Harry Connick Jr. Orchestra, traveling the world and recording numerous albums and television specials. Dan also toured internationally and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, Tom Jones and Woody Herman. He has also performed with: The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, The Lionel Hampton Orchestra, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Curtis Fuller, Branford Marsalis, Randy Brecker, Frank Foster, Jon Hendricks, George Coleman, Charles McPherson, Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, Tom Harrell, David "Fathead" Newman, Ira Sullivan, Bobby Shew and Jack McDuff. Since 2005, he has split his time between NYC and Florida and he’s currently a member of the Naples Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra and the musical director of the Naples Philharmonic Youth Jazz Orchestra. Dan is a Yamaha Clinician and Performing Artist and works with college bands, high school bands and private students nationwide. Jeff Rupertis a Trustee Chair, Pegasus Professor, and Director of Jazz Studies at UCF. He is a saxophonist, composer, record producer, and recording artist. Rupert has been a featured soloist on dozens of recordings with artists including Sam Rivers, Mel Tormé, Diane Schuur, Benny Carter and Maynard Ferguson. He played on Benny Carter's Harlem Renaissance which won a Grammy. . He has also performed with Kevin Mahogany, Ernestine Anderson, Joe Farnsworth, Ray Drummond, Harry Allen, pianist Benny Green, Kenny Drew jr, trumpeter Michael Philip Mossman, and pianist and singer Judy Carmichael. Rupert currently is the leader of The Jazz Professors, a sextet which had top JazzWeek charting hit albums in 2012-2015. "The Jazz Professors: Live at the UCF-Orlando Jazz Festival" (Flying Horse, 2011) which and peaked at #19 during its seventeen weeks on the JazzWeek charts. His third album, "From Memphis to Mobile", with Kenny Drew, Jr. Rupert joined Sam Rivers' band in 1996 and appeared in four recordings with the group. He has performed in hundreds of concerts with Rivers, including performances at Lincoln for Ed Bradley's Jazz from Lincoln Center (broadcast on NPR), the Vision Festival NYC and Columbia University. He has been a member of the Jaguar International Jazz Series alongside Joe LaBarbera, Tom Wharington, Larry Koonse, and John Fedchock. Most recently he performed with Michael Philip Mossman and John Riley at the Taipei National Concert Hall, Taiwan.

Jerry Stawskiplays regularly at the Ritz Carlton Naples and the Ritz Carlton Tiburon. He has played with the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra and the Symphony of SW Florida, and has performed concerts for the Naples Jazz Society, the SW Florida Jazz Society, the Charlotte County Jazz Society and the Italian Cultural Society. Jerry holds a Bachelor of Music Ed from FSU. In addition to assisting many high school music programs, including the Community School, Barron Collier High, Palmetto Ridge High and Edison College, Jerry is also musical director for the Unity Church in Bonita Springs. Jerry is also the pianist for Haze Greenfield’s Jazz-A-Ma-Tazz and he is currently the co-bandleader of the Naples Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra.

Drummer Tony Vigilante, a native of Philadelphia, is not only a wonderfully swinging jazz drummer, but classically trained and a graduate of the Curtis Institute. During a long career, Tony has backed up many singers and entertainers such as Della Reese, Billy Eckstine, Maureen McGovern and Perry Como. He's recorded with Buddy De Franco, the Al Raymond Orchestra and the Brian Pastor Big Band. Vigilante was a member of Ben Vereen's touring band performing in Las Vegas, Reno and Tahoe casinos, as well as numerous theater performances on the East Coast.

Don Mopsick, bassist for the acclaimed Jim Cullum Jazz Band for about two decades, played with them nightly at The Landing jazz club in San Antonio, toured, and recorded hundreds of hours for the Riverwalk Jazz public radio series, backing up such jazz luminaries as Benny Carter, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Joe Williams, Bob Wilber, Kenny Davern and many others. He has also played concert dates with many top artists such as Dick Hyman, Howard Alden, Mousey Alexander, Mose Allison, Bill Allred, Dan Barrett, John Bunch, Ralph Sutton, Pete Christleib, Al Cohn, Buddy DeFranco, Scott Hamilton, Ken Peplowski, Bob Rosengarden, Ira Sullivan, Clark Terry, Warren Vaché Jr., Joe Wilder and many others. Don returned to Southwest Florida in 2010 and is in much demand by the area’s top players, and also continues to tour and play many festivals and concerts.
