Please join us as we honor the legacy of Japanese American women at UC Berkeley and recognize the accomplishments of our undergraduate and graduate scholarship recipients -- Olivia Canak, Juliette Franzman, Nicole Inaba, Areyon Jolivette, Maya Lemmon-Kishi, and Gemma Vanover -- as well as our Outstanding Alumna of the year, Betty Furuta. We will also hear from our keynote speaker, Dr. Satsuki Ina.

Outstanding Alumna of the Year

Betty Sasaki Furuta graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) in 1957 and subsequently earned a Master of Science in nursing from UCSF in 1959. She served in numerous capacities during her illustrious career at UCSF, including Coordinator of Academic Services and Special Studies and Assistant Dean of Student and International Academic Services. In 1995, Betty was recruited by Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare in Kurashiki, Japan, where she spent eight years as a professor and administrator. Betty also has served on the Board of Directors for JAWAUCB for over ten years in various positions, including Chair and Recording Secretary.

Social Justice and Community Healing

Dr. Satsuki Ina is an activist, professor, filmmaker, and therapist who has dedicated her work to researching and addressing the long-term, intergenerational impact of incarceration trauma. Dr. Ina has produced two award-winning documentary films about the WWII Japanese American incarceration, Children of the Camps, and From A Silk Cocoon. In the last year, Dr. Ina has co-founded and led Tsuru for Solidarity, an organization dedicated to ending the detention of immigrant and refugee communities who are being targeted by current national immigration policies.
