Event Details

Emerging economic trends and markets are important factors in determining the future of the Triangle’s economy. Join three of the Triangle’s innovative leaders to discuss key factors driving regional economic growth and how developing industry sectors are creating opportunities now and in the future. During this session, you will learn more about clean technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), Fintech, Megasites and more. What technologies are being developed in the Triangle and will they be transformational?  Why are these technologies being developed here? How will emerging technology sectors translate into economic development success?

Speakers:

Moderator: Lee Anne Nance, Chief Strategic Officer – Stewart

Lee Anne Nance serves as Chief Strategic Officer (CSO) at Stewart. Her primary responsibilities include brand and market development through new business and strategic partnerships, strengthening relationships with new and existing clients, building positive awareness of the firm, as well as strategic planning and implementation of initiatives. Prior to working at Stewart, Lee Anne had her own economic development and marketing consulting practice and worked as a local and regional economic developer for 16 years. Lee Anne is a proud NC native and Wolfpacker, with undergraduate and graduate degrees in Economics from North Carolina State University.

Susan Sanford, Executive Director – Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster (RTCC)

Susan Sanford brings a broad mix of skills to her role as the executive director of the Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster (RTCC). Susan is technically skilled in analyzing economic development issues, including labor markets and cluster development, and has 15+ years of experience in business development and nonprofit management. She holds a master’s in public administration and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from UNC-Chapel Hill. At RTCC, Susan’s team is focused on marketing the Research Triangle region to attract cleantech companies, fostering collaboration that leads to job growth and wealth in the region, and identifying demonstration sites to showcase the region’s cleantech innovation.

Michael Haley, Executive Director – Wake County Economic Development

Michael Haley is the Executive Director for Wake County Economic Development and the Senior Vice President of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. Wake County Economic Development – a public private partnership between Wake County, the City of Raleigh, and the private sector – is the lead economic development agency for Wake County. Michael leads WCED’s business recruitment, retention and expansion; marketing and public relations; talent recruitment and retention; and support of entrepreneurship. Prior to his current role, Michael served as the Director of Business Recruitment and Expansion for WCED. Prior to joining WCED, Michael served as a Public Policy Analyst and then the Public Policy Director for the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Larry Steffann, Co-founder – North Carolina Regional Internet of Things (NC RIoT) and General Manager of Wireless Research Center

Larry is a serial entrepreneur including as a CEO and COO taking two companies to exits via both IPO and corporate acquisition. Larry is founder of RIoT, an internationally recognized IoT group with over 5,000 members. He launched the very first startup incubator (Joystick Labs) in the American Underground and has been Entrepreneur in Residence at the NC State Poole College of Management. He currently manages the nonprofit Wireless Research Center.
