“The transition of drawing into painting can really be simplified as the addition of water and color to dust and dirt on a surface with a tool. Everything else is open to interpretation and experimentation.” - Sara Cole
Through Painted Pants Studio, Sara V Cole, BFA, MFA, offers portrait/self-portrait workshops and 6-week long figurative classes. All workshops and classes focus on a method of “drawing into painting” and developing a participant’s personal voice while learning formal aspects of the figure. Class size is extremely limited to allow for individualized instruction.
The mixed-media DRAWING INTO PAINTING FIGURATIVE WORKSHOPS at Painted Pants Studio are structured in a true “workshop” fashion as an intensive exploration of process, materials, and experience. These workshops are intended to create a body of knowledge, a body of experience, and a body of studies with the intent of helping the artist develop their creative voice, process, working methods, and development of ideas to implement into future projects. Each participant will be invited to exhibit in a group exhibition in Spring 2017 of Painted Pants Studio Figurative Workshop artists.
The DRAWING INTO PAINTING FIGURATIVE WORKSHOPS participants will predominantly work on paper with nontoxic materials beginning with traditional dry media and transitioning into wet media while learning how to aesthetically dance between mixed media processes in the study of the human figure. We will explore acrylic, gesso, graphite, ink, pastel, charcoal, pressurized water, squeegees, paint scrapers, house paint, collage, alternative mark making tools and more. We will explore working with color theory and working on multiples simultaneously. Each participant should finish the workshop with many studies.
The DRAWING INTO PAINTING FIGURATIVE WORKSHOPS will study from models, self-portrait observation, and work from invented sources. We will focus on structure and anatomy, expression and psychology, subject and content, and personal or social viewpoints of the figure. Participants will also practice creating projects based from quick figure studies. In the PORTRAIT workshop, participants will focus on the head, neck and shoulders of the figure, on likeness, and on the self-portrait vs. painting the other.
