Conference Description

Communities across North Carolina are developing Family Justice Centers in order to improve their capacity to meet the needs of survivors and their children. As communities consider co-locating services for survivors and their children in multi-disciplinary models, the Governor’s Crime Commission is funding a statewide best practices conference, in collaboration with Safe Alliance, a victim services agency in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The 2019 conference will focus on collaborative, multi-disciplinary programs to address domestic and sexual violence, breakout groups to encourage members of different disciplines to learn from colleagues across the state and include a four-hour expert certification course on identifying and responding to non-fatal strangulation cases. Mark Wynn, nationally recognized speaker and “twenty-one year member of the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department,” is the keynote speaker. Gael Strack, Esq., is facilitating several discussions and offering her expertise on collaborative leadership, as well as non-fatal strangulation. Gael is the CEO of Alliance for HOPE International and has spearheaded much of the initial work and research on strangulation crimes from a prosecutor’s perspective.

Whether you are just starting to consider multi-agency partnerships, have already begun planning co-located services, or are part of an open Family Justice/Multi-Agency Center, this statewide conference is an excellent opportunity to learn from and be inspired by others in the movement.

Communities are highly encouraged to attend the conference as part of a multidisciplinary team. Breakout sessions will include affinity group discussions for advocates, civil and criminal attorneys, law enforcement and survivors.

Conference Topics Include

  • Overview of the Family Justice Center Movement
  • Family Justice Center Operations and Partnerships
  • Highlights of Successful Community Collaborations
  • Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention (February 1st, 12:00 - 4:00pm)
