January 2019 Functional Forum Meetup

Shining New Light on Neurodegeneration: Integrating Photobiomodulation and Neurofeedback in the treatment of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

There is a growing recognition and acceptance within the scientific community that treatment of neurodegenerative conditions is better addressed at a systemic level because there are a number of causal factors at both neurophysiological and biochemical levels to be understood and managed. Quietmind Foundation's approach to studying and constructing useful interventions strategies along these lines is the focus of this presentation, specifically, the development of noninvasive, non-drug protocols for stopping and reversing neurodegeneration, e.g., transcranial near-infrared photobiomodulation and EEG biofeedback training. We'll look at the use of near infrared light stimulation to treat tissue-level pathology while re-normalizing the neural connectivity that was the result of a deteriorating central nervous system. Current literature and clinical trial protocols will be discussed along with a live demonstration.

Bio:

Marvin H Berman PhD, CBT, is founder and President at Quietmind Foundation, a nonprofit applied clinical research and treatment center in Elkins Park. He's a certified neurofeedback therapist and published pioneering research on combining neurofeedback training and photobiomodulation in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. He is an internationally recognized thought leader in the field of photobiomodulation research and its clinical application in the treatment of dementia, Parkinson's and traumatic brain injury. Dr. Berman and Quietmind Fdn. are now collaborating with Baylor, Scott & White Research Institute on the multi-site, human clinical trial utilizing home-based transcranial and intraocular photobiomodulation treatment of early to mid-stage dementia.
