Airport Authority's Largest Geothermal Lake Plate Cooling System in North America

In an innovative use of a former rock quarry, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) reduces electricity usage and potable water consumption with the largest geothermal lake plate cooling system in North America. The project takes advantage of cool temperature by circulating water through geothermal heat exchangers submerged in the quarry to the airport terminal’s central plant, providing cooling for the entire terminal. In addition to the geothermal system, the project uses quarry water for landscape irrigation. A few hightlights from the presentation include:

  • North America’s largest geothermal lake plate cooling system resides at the Nashville International Airport.
  • An abandoned rock quarry, which holds 1.5 billion gallons of water, naturally cools recirculated water.
  • Cooling of the entire 900,000 sf terminal building is offset using this system.
  • The airport is saving 1.3 million kilowatt-hours and 30 million gallons of potable water, and $430,000 each year
