Event description

Description

Join us at the Henry Art Gallery on the University of Washington’s campus for a Regency Clothing Workshop led by fashion historian Agnes Gawne! Learn about pelisses and cravats, muslin gowns and riding coats, and even get the chance to see authentic Regency clothing housed in the Henry Art Gallery’s collection!

Agnes Gawne is the lecturer in Fashion History at the New York Fashion
Academy in Ballard; she is also the Regional Coordinator for the Jane Austen
Society of North America, Puget Sound Region.
She is delighted to join two of her fields of interest together to celebrate
Jane Fest.

She is a lifelong student of fashion history with a special focus on the
18th and early 19th centuries. She likes to focus on observing the effect
that advances in technology have had on clothing and textiles. With the
industrial revolution already affecting the production of textiles during
Jane Austen's life, and changes in society and class structure (as
illustrated by the American and French Revolutions) there are many rapid
changes in garments that reflect the broader changes in society.

Using artifacts housed in the Henry Art Gallery Collection from the time
period of Jane Austen's Life (1775-1817) she will discuss the quickly
changing styles of this exciting period in history that contains many
important events (such as, the American Revolution, The French Revolution,
The Napoleonic Wars, The American Federal Period, and The War of 1812.) Her
presentation will show examples from portraiture and from extant clothing
that are similar to the items that will be available for viewing from the
Henry Collection.

Tickets are limited but free.
