On September 28, 2019, the Jane Austen Society of North America-Wisconsin Region and Carroll University will sponsor an all-day symposium featuring two speakers from Jane Austen's House Museum in Chawton, England. Martyn Dell, a trustee of the museum, will speak on "A Year in the Life of Jane Austen's House." Sue Dell, a collections volunteer at the museum, will speak on “Jane Austen’s Quilt,” discussing the design, construction, and historical context of the patchwork coverlet stitched by Jane Austen, her mother, and her sister, and lead a workshop on quilt-making using the traditional paper-piecing method. Posters depicting traditional "female accomplishments" and a replica of Jane Austen’s quilt will be on display, and Carroll University students will perform selections of music traditionally performed at home by women in the Regency era.

Symposium Schedule

9:00 a.m.

  • Check-in
  • Social time - Sweet rolls and tea breads with coffee and tea
  • Viewing of posters depicting traditional “female accomplishments” in the Regency era and a replica of Jane Austen’s quilt.

9:30 a.m. Welcome and Introductory talk by Kim Wilson, JASNA-Wisconsin Regional Coordinator: “‘So extremely accomplished!’: Representations of Female Accomplishments in Jane Austen’s Novels."

10:00 a.m. Lecture by Martyn Dell, trustee, Jane Austen’s House Museum, Chawton, Hampshire, UK: “A Year in the Life of Jane Austen's House,” followed by a Q&A session.

11:00 a.m. Lecture by Sue Dell, collections volunteer, Jane Austen’s House Museum: “Jane Austen’s Quilt”: A discussion of the design, construction, and historical context of the quilt stitched by Jane Austen, her mother, and her sister, with slides showing the quilt in detail, followed by a Q&A session.

12:00 noon Buffet Lunch

  • Soup and Sandwich buffet
  • Viewing of displays

1:00 p.m. Concert by Carroll University Students featuring music from the Austen family songbooks.

1:30 p.m. English Paper Piecing Patchwork for Beginners Workshop – Participants will be introduced to the technique that Jane Austen and her family used to make the patchwork coverlet on display at Jane Austen’s House Museum. With guidance from Sue Dell, the Jane Austen's House Museum's expert on the coverlet, you will make a patchwork shape and receive instructions on how to use it for a cushion cover, placemat, or pin cushion. Some scissors will be available, but if you are able to bring your own, please do. Fabric and other supplies will be provided.

3:00 p.m. End of symposium.

Lunch buffet menu:

Selection of gourmet sandwiches: Muffuletta vegetarian; Cajun roast turkey with pepperjack cheese, Bermuda onion, and Cajun mayo; turkey bacon ranch with pepperjack cheese and ranch dressing; Mediterranean grilled chicken sun-dried tomato hummus ciabatta.

Soup: Roasted red pepper and gouda bisque

Dessert bars

Beverages: Lemonade, water, coffee, tea
