James Vs. Reality

Behind The Scenes with Chris and Tim

Learn about visual effects and enjoy this special showing of a locally filmed and produced adventure of heroically insane proportions. The films main contributors will be at the event to provide commentary, storyboards and a Q&A session. They will discuss compositing and behind the scenes CG insight. “James Vs. Reality” is Chris Wilson and Tim Feeneys first live action film, filled with humor, love, action, and the most amazing visual effects ever seen in a no-budget short film!


James Vs. Reality” is a comedy short about an escaped mental patient who thinks he is a superhero. It was made entirely by Portland actors and filmmakers, and will be shown on Sunday afternoon, April third, at the Living Room Theaters. In the film, James McMurphy is a mental patient who believes he has super powers. Escaping daily, James uses his special powers to fight crime and save the world!


Event Details

The 28-minute film will be shown in its entirety, followed by behind-the-scenes footage, special effects shot break-downs, and a question and answer session. See examples and learn about how the computer graphics were created. Skip the box office, come in and register at the table inside the door. Food and drinks may be consumed in the theater.


About the Speakers

Chris Wilson is the co-writer and co-director of James Vs. Reality, and did all the visual effects. He is an independent animation filmmaker and is currently the director and 3D artist on The Chronicles of Nerm, a solo animated film project and the second in the “Nerm” series ( That solo film has been in production for almost four years and features the voice talent of Zoe Bell, lead from Tarantino᾿s ʻDeath Proofʼ and ABC᾿s ʻLost,ʼ famed voice over actor Marc Graue and many more. His work has been published in multiple books and magazines and on television shows such as the Colbert Report.


Tim Feeney is the co-writer and co-director of “James Vs. Reality.” Tim has worked on several video games such as Fable 2, Rock Band and Tron: Evolution. He is a concept artist as well and accomplished digital painter. He enjoys sculpting, both digital and practical visual FX work, and many other art mediums.

This upscale and laid-back theater is in downtown Portland, one block south of Powellʼs Books, on 10th. Parking is available on the street (free on Sunday) and in parking lots (for a fee.) Transit: Max Blue Line, 10th St. Trolley or Trimet bus are recommended, as is carpooling. Registration and Amenities

This and other Cascade ACM SIGGRAPH meetings are free to Cascade Chapter members. Nonmembers will need to pay $5.00 admission. Annual local membership can be purchased at the ticketing site or at the door for $25.00 a year for professionals and $18.00 for students. We accept cash or checks at the door and credit cards online at EventBrite ticketing. Prepayment and registration is available at Please note, due to the theater size, attendance is limited to 50 people so you’ll want to get your tickets early. Respect the ability to pre-register no-shows hurt those that wanted to come but cannot, due to the seating capacity.


Food and drinks will be available for purchase in the Living Room Theater lounge. They recommend arriving and ordering approximately 30 minutes before the showtime to enjoy in-theater service: delivery of food and/or drinks to your seat in the theater. The menu is available at, like all SIGGRAPH events are limited to those over 18 years of age.
