About this Event

JAMES OF MOSAICS

This mosaic of craftspeople began with the initiative of James Morse, a Kennesaw-raised, Atlanta-native. James is an artist working in a variety of media from found objects to paint to sound. His method generally employs impressionistic and collage techniques, and he brings with him a rigorous commitment to the process of craft, study, and experimentation in his art.

[ In the projects The Desert and Young, the mosaic orchestrates a movement of an individual person through different spaces or rooms. The resulting art is akin to the work of artists such as Andrew Bird, Ben Howard, Sufjan Stevens, Nick Drake, David Crosby, and Henry Jamison. Like these songsmiths, james of mosaics focuses on creating diverse instrumental and ambient textures beneath a rich literary narrative. As Cooper Casale, another Georgia writer, comments, Young is "a beautifully produced album of spiritual investigation and quiet triumph. Reminds [him] of The Antlers quite a bit. The accompaniments are ghostly, yet resolute and confident. The multi-instrumentalist has never felt more comfortable in his abilities and in the musicians around him." ] If you're looking for impressionistic indie folk to shake your soul awake, james of mosaics invites you to enter the journey.

STRAY FOSSA

Nick and Will Evans, alongside Zach Blount comprise Charlottesville-based indie band Stray Fossa. Drawing on mixed musical inspiration absorbed from parents’ record collections, the trio got their start organizing regular free concerts in their hometown of Sewanee, Tennessee. Today, after a six-year hiatus, their creative process has reemerged in the face of opposing artistic tastes, yet shared obsession to make more sound than one would expect from a three-piece.

“Heavy on atmosphere and hypnotic vocal harmonies” the band pools ambient bass and guitar layering with shimmering vocal washes to craft songs that hover somewhere between modern garage and indie pop with a varnish of nostalgia for what hit the airwaves in the 60s and 70s. The Evans brothers’ lyrics float on top—at times an intimate narrative and other times mixing pointed observation with subtle and unassuming commentary on human behavior and complacency.

The band's debut EP, "Sleeper Strip" (2018), garnered praise from notable blogs and magazines, such as The Wild Honey Pie, Obscure Sound, Whurk Magazine, Look Up Records. Compared to the likes of Beach House, Real Estate and The War on Drugs, the release yields a “nocturnal vein of rock with strong melodic elements” – a “heart-rending blend of garage rock and dream pop” with “consistently superb vocal deliveries throughout”. Outlets were quick to applaud the songwriting, home recording and self-sufficiency in music production.
