James Rouse has performed and traveled the world as the pacemaker for high profile acts such as Nile Rogers and Chic, Ray Chew, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Pharrell Williams, Usher, and is the current drummer for the Screaming Headless Torsos. From 2010-2015, James or “Biscuit” as he is affectionately known throughout the industry, was been the featured drummer for the Ms. Lauryn Hill Band, while also assuming programming and music direction responsibilities. Currently he is the musical director for Vivian Green, and the leader of his band, The Buttered Biscuits.
After completing his education at both the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) and Temple University, James quickly grabbed attention and acclaim from artists both in and out of his hometown of Philadelphia. Lady Alma, Kindred the Family Soul, Bilal, Jazmine Sullivan, Kelis, Kelly Clarkson and Gerald Veasley have all shared the experience of James keeping time behind them.
In 2009, James teamed with house music legend Kenny Dope and released his first project, a single called “Money for Love”, where he took the spotlight as a vocalist. In 2012, James released his debut album “Conversations in Analog, Vol. 1”, which covered the genres in which he became most known for: jazz, R&B/soul and house. In addition to his drumming, James also shows his vocal talent on the album-ending track “Freedom”.
James is currently putting the finishing touches on his next album and continuing to add to his already lengthy and impressive list of collaborators. He continually finds inspirations in both legends like Buddy Miles, Phil Collins and Earth, Wind & Fire, as well as contemporaries and friends Lil’ John Roberts and Ahmir ‘?uestlove’ Thompson.
