Jameel Stephens
Overview
A Southside Chicago native, began playing drums at the age of 2, first using pots, pans, and spoons as a makeshift kit. By 5, he was playing in church, learning by ear from watching older musicians. Though he was more passionate about sports growing up, music was always present whether at pep rallies or in school bands.
He attended Benedictine University on a football scholarship while majoring in music education. When the scholarship ended he transferred to Illinois State University where he shifted his focus to Music Business and Jazz Studies after realizing his passion was in playing not teaching. Recognized by professors as “a workable talent” he began taking formal drum lessons to compliment his natural gift.
His dedication led him from entry level jazz groups to becoming the top drummer in every elite jazz band on campus. He eventually earned a Masters degree in jazz performance.
Now a professional drummer touring the world, Jameel credits faith as the foundation of his journey: “What I wanted was about me and that is never enough, what he wanted was about him and that’s more than I could ever imagine.
