Event description
A celebration of the life, work and art of legendary and influential drummer Jaki Liebezeit of Can.

About this Event

Jaki Liebezeit is a legendary figure among musicians, best remembered as the groove and power behind the influential German band Can. Until now, though, few have known about his most significant legacy – a complete practical theory of drumming, based on the natural principles of movement he observed during his lifelong research into the discipline.

Following Jaki’s unexpected death in 2017, producer Jono Podmore and journalist John Payne contacted his drum group Drums Off Chaos and long-term collaborator Burnt Friedman to see if the theory could be pieced together before it was lost or corrupted. Fortunately, the basic principles had already been transcribed, and with the help of Jaki’s widow Birgit Berger, composer Manos Tsangaris and discographer Bryan O’Connell, they have assembled a comprehensive account of not only the drum theory, but also Jaki’s profound conceptual and practical vision as applied throughout his life.

This landmark book features a host of previously unseen photos including reproductions of Jaki’s own artwork, alongside the first-ever discography to cover the full, unparalleled range of his recordings.

Jono Podmore, aka Kumo – Professor of the Practice of Popular Music at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, Germany – is best known latterly for his tireless work curating the archives of Krautrock pioneers Can. Podmore has also been working on his own musical projects under his Kumo alias across multiple releases and performances worldwide since 1995. His established group Metamono finds new life in vintage analogue and handmade electronics. A long-standing contributor to music website Getintothis, his pieces cover broader political and sociological themes. Jono hails from Liverpool and lives in London where he teaches Tai Chi.

Jono will discuss Jaki’s life, work and art with Birgit Berger, Bryan O'Connell, David Stubbs, author Future Days: Krautrock And The Building of Modern Germany and Ian Tregoning. There will be music from special guest DJs and some never-before-seen video of Jaki edited by video artist diz_qo.

All in all a very special night and tribute to Jaki.
