Description

Jake "Buddy" Saunders will be joining us for a Meet & Greet Event on November 18. 2017.

Buddy Saunders is well known and respected within the comic book retailing industry for his retailing skills and organizational ability. During his forty-plus years as a retailer of comic books and related pop culture memorabilia, he has received frequent industry recognition, and has been a featured speaker at industry trade shows where he has spoken on such subjects as building a successful retail chain, expanding the market, and computerization.

Buddy Saunders began collecting comics in 1960. Spider-Man #1, which he originally purchased off the newsstand for 12c and still owns, currently sells for over $90,000. So don’t laugh at his hobby! In 1961 Buddy started a mail-order back-issue comic book service that put him through college, and formed the foundation of his Lone Star Comics retail chain and internet web site, Mycomicshop.com. During the 1960's, Buddy was active in early comic book fandom, writing fiction, non-fiction, and illustrating amateur comic books. He has also written professionally. In 1970 Ballantine Books published The Texas-Israeli War: 1999, a science fiction novel he co-authored with childhood friend Howard Waldrop. One of Buddy’s short stores was nominated for a Nebula Award.

Buddy’s most recent literary efforts, writing as Jake Saunders, include two novels set in the Edgard Rice Burroughs universe—The Martian Legion: In Quest of Xonthron (2014) and Tarzan and the Cannibal King (2017).

After quitting his teaching job, Buddy opened his first Lone Star Comics store in Arlington in 1977. A few years later, his wife Judy left her job as an Assistant Regional Commissioner of Immigration and joined Buddy in their business. Over the years, Lone Star Comics grew to a six store chain with a major internet presence. Their son, Conan, a graduate of MIT, with a master’s from UT, is Lone Star’s senior software programmer. Today Lone Star's inventory management software is the most advanced in the comic book industry, and has much to do with the company’s success.

After living all over Texas—Corpus Christi, Odessa, El Paso—Buddy’s family moved to Arlington in 1954. Except for a brief residence in Arlington, Virginia, when Buddy worked for the publisher of Human Events, a conservative Washington, D.C. based national weekly newspaper. Buddy has been a lifelong resident of Arlington, Texas.
