About this Event

In partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design and The Sachs Program for Arts Innovation, The Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM) presents a lecture by artist Jacolby Satterwhite. Discussing his current collaboration as Artist-in-Residence with FWM, Satterwhite will delve into the reimagined elements and new dimensions of his acclaimed digital animation work spanning nearly a decade as featured in Room for Living, his first solo museum show. From the initial phase of his two-year residency, the artist has worked with the FWM studio team to integrate digital fabrication tools into his expanding practice, bringing animations to life in physical form. The exhibition—on view at FWM from September 13, 2019 through January 19, 2020—features multimedia installations, new video works, and a virtual reality experience. Join us for this rare opportunity to hear Satterwhite reflect on the evolution of these new works and the ways in which they relate to scenes and motifs featured in his previous series.

About Jacolby Satterwhite

Jacolby Satterwhite (b. 1986, South Carolina) is a Brooklyn-based visual and conceptual artist whose interdisciplinary practice includes video, performance, 3D animation, fiber, and printmaking. Drawing from an extensive set of references—queer theory, modernism, video game history, and personal mythology—he synthesizes multiple disciplines in immersive installations. Satterwhite employs virtual reality (VR) and digital media to produce intricately detailed animations and live action video of real and imagined worlds populated by avatars. The artist holds a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. He is represented by Mitchell, Innes and Nash in New York; Morán Morán in Los Angeles; and Lundgren Gallery in Mallorca, Spain. Satterwhite's work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), The Whitney Museum of American Art, and Studio Museum in Harlem, among others. He received the USA (United States Artists) Francie Bishop Good & David Horvitz Fellowship in 2016.
