This two-day FEES Training Course covers a review of recent research use of instrumentation to evaluate swallowing and identifying normal and abnormal swallowing. Information is provided on developing a FEES program and incorporating FEES into clinical practice. Hands-on supervision is provided both afternoons to allow participants the opportunity to learn to maneuver the endoscope for a swallowing assessment with a focus on obtaining optimal view of the larynx while keeping in mind the ergonomics of the endoscopist. Time is spent reviewing clips from recorded FEES exams to allow the participant to begin to interpret FEES. Full case presentations are presented, as well.

Learning Objectives:
- Determine appropriate use of instrumental swallowing assessments.
- Describe a protocol for administering FEES.
- Identify anatomy as it is visualized through the endoscope.
- Differentiate normal from abnormal swallowing using FEES.
- Safely pass an endoscope through the nose and establish adequate pre-swallow and post-swallow positions.

Selena Reece received her Master’s degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel in 2003. She has worked in acute care, outpatient, and inpatient rehabilitation settings. She currently serves as the Director of Educational Resources for Carolina Speech Pathology, while carrying an active caseload providing mobile FEES services. She is a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and an ACE continuing education award recipient. Selena was featured on Swallow Your Pride Podcast, Episode 18. She has been deemed competent for supervision and training in FEES by a board certified Otolaryngologist.

Kristen Cline received her undergraduate degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and her graduate degree from Appalachian State University. She is a member of ASHA’s Special Interest Group 13 (Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders), the North Carolina Speech Hearing and Language Association (NCSHLA), and the North Carolina Association of Supervisors in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology (NCASSPA). She is Past President of NCSHLA and currently serves on the Healthcare subcommittee for NCSHLA's Professional Affairs Committee. Kristen worked in acute care and inpatient rehabilitation settings prior to joining CSP in March 2018. She has been a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders since 2012 and has received ASHA’s Award for Continuing Education (ACE) on four occasions. She has been deemed competent for supervision and training in FEES by a board certified otolaryngologist.

This course is offered for 1.5 ASHA CEUs (Professional Area, Intermediate Level)
Succesful participation in this course includes 100% attendance. All participants who successfully completed this course will receive a course completion certificate via email within one week of completing this course. If you would like your participation reported to ASHA, you must complete the ASHA Participation form that was provided to you at the course and submit to the course instructor prior to leaving the course. ASHA CE Providers have up to 45 days from the course's end date to send your participation to the ASHA CE Registry. The ASHA CE Registry processing time usually takes one week.
