Event Details

The Indigenous Youth and Community Wellness Secretariat, in conjunction with TakingITGlobal, invites you to join us in a showcase and conversation about the power of community to ignite change and shape a nation.

Recently shown at the Bell TIFF Lightbox, a special screening of the documentary ‘RISING VOICES’ will be held on Monday, January 22, 2018 from 12:00-1:30pm at MIRR.

About the film

Rising Voices is a raw insight into the lives of young people across Canada, from Whitehorse to St. John's, to Arviat, to Montreal, to Winnipeg, and in between. We are looking at the past, present and future of these communities, and having the three simultaneously, it comments on topics including mental health, indigenous rights, systemic discrimination, expression through the arts, cultural reintegration, environmental sustainability, young love, and refugees. The sole purpose of this film is to give the platform to these young people to let the country know how we can improve on our communities, build upon our success, reconcile and understand that as a community we all have the same desires and drives.

Adrian Assoufi – Filmmaker

Born in the city of Vienna, Austria, to an Iraqi businessman and a Serbian engineer, Adrian Assoufi grew up with his grandfather, Gojko, who nourished his imagination and values through worldwide cultural exposure. As an aspiring filmmaker and avid admirer of social cinema, Adrian's work continuously explores the energy and beauty of humanity; finding the light, healing and themes of transformation. Through his work with TakingITGlobal, Adrian supports outreach and engagement across a range of national and international platforms. He has assisted in successfully launching national campaigns surrounding various social issues, including girl's access to education, community building in Canada and environmental sustainability. He has spoken on various panels and has delivered an equal rights workshop at the CCUNESCO's 56th Annual General Meeting in Winnipeg

Waukomaun - Filmmaker
Waukomaun is an Ojibwe from Wasauksing First Nation. He has a background in the television and film industry and has travelled across Canada documenting and sharing inspiring stories from Indigenous communities across the country. He loves to experience the outdoors by camping, fishing, learning traditional survival techniques, and connecting with Mother Nature.
Currently, Waukomaun serves as Indigenous  Education Coordinator for the Connected North program with TakingITGlobal. Through the program he works as a liaison to remote and northern Indigenous communities by coordinating interactive and immersive educational services through  video conferencing technology. Each session is customized to fit the needs of each class and adapting expectations  for the learning goals of each school.
As a lead for 6 schools in the Connected North program, Waukomaun works to build relationships with content partners and communities to ensure that content is appropriate, culturally sensitive and meets the needs of the students. On occasion, Waukomaun is a guest expert himself by sharing his story as an Indigenous role model, or by delivering sessions on photography, video or cultural based sessions on drumming from his Ojibwe background.
By fostering student engagement and supporting education by providing students and teachers with access to engaging and innovative content, Waukomaun hopes to encourage growth  and feelings of empowerment to the youth he works with.
