Description
Conversations in Artificial Intelligence
From autonomous cars and predictive search recommendations to voice-powered assistants like Alexa and Siri, artificial intelligence is poised to dramatically change the way we design products, services and experiences. While still in its infancy, digital product professionals are clamoring to get up to speed on where AI is now, and how they can design for the near future with AI in mind.
How does the design and development process change? What best practices should I be following? What are the biggest pitfalls to avoid? Hear from three perspectives — user experience, design strategy and technology — as our diverse panel of professionals share project stories, personal experiences and tips that illustrate how to meaningfully incorporate AI in your work.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS
Kelly Clark (moderator), is a creative leader and VP Design with over 20 years of experience in user centered design and brand experience. With deep expertise in digital product design, interface design, user experience and research, Kelly leads the interaction design discipline at Smart Design’s New York studio, focused on developing impactful and engaging digital products. Prior to this, Kelly worked in a creative leadership role for a variety of digital and software agencies and in house UXD groups, as well as running her own agency in San Francisco.
Dominic Poon is a UX director with a long career in designing and crafting experiences for complex products and emerging technologies. His background in illustration leads him to focus on the storytelling nature of information and the perceptual nature of experience — two aspects he feels are essential to introducing new paradigms to society. After toying around with NFC for retail and designing the first generations of iPad apps, Dominic is now crafting cognitive experiences for healthcare, finance and distribution industries at IBM iX.
Elizabeth Holli Wood is a writer and content strategist in NYC. As a design consultant, she has worked with organizations including Smart Design, frog and the United Nations to guide the structure and delivery of written communications, user interface copy, information architecture and (particularly important for AI-enabled products and services) data curation. She also hosts ‘The Future is Gross,’ a podcast that explores technology’s role in shaping the future in unexpected and sometimes uncomfortable ways.
Patrick Way has worked in technology and the arts for over 15 years, serving organizations as diverse as Rhizome and The Rachel Ray Show. He currently is a Senior Software Engineer at Intersection developing user experiences across a wide range of sensors and surfaces including augmented reality, computer vision, indoor location, messaging and voice.
ABOUT OUR HOST
Smart Design is a strategic design company that helps people live better and work smarter. In 1980, Smart’s founders set out to pioneer the business of design that puts people first.
More than 30 years later, they’ve brought over 1,000 products and services to market — helping BBVA build a design capability, giving the New York taxi a makeover and partnering with Gatorade on a personalized hydration system for elite athletes. With business challenges becoming more intertwined with multi-channel experiences, they’re launching innovation platforms, redefining customer journeys, helping clients launch into emerging markets and reimagining entirely new revenue streams.
As technology evolves, Smart’s fundamental goal remains the same: make experiences more intuitive, enjoyable and relevant. For more information about Smart Design, visit their website.
