Event description

Join us in the Catskill Mountains of New York for the 20th Annual Images & Voices of Hope Summit. This year’s theme is “Restoring Community, One Story at a Time.” We come together as journalists, photographers, filmmakers, artists, and creatives interested in revealing stories that acknowledge the hard things that are happening in our towns and communities and in learning the inner and outer skills to develop stories that build resilience and amplify unheard voices.

This is a rare chance to step away to the mountains and connect with others engaged in high purpose work. This year, we’ll explore Restorative Narrative in depth. You’ll learn about the life cycle of trauma in communities, about the emotional requirements of telling and showing difficult stories. You’ll come to understand the inner workings of narratives that track the trajectory of recovery. And you’ll learn from some of the best --- faculty and working media professionals who are deeply committed to this work.

From your first moment to your last, you’ll have endless opportunities to network with attendees from across the media sector, contribute new insights and ideas, and benefit from immersing in a transformative experience. You’ll connect with like-minded media makers, screen films, hear exhilarating talks and engage in thought-provoking dialog.

The Summit begins on Thursday, June 20th, at 6pm with a welcome session and dinner, followed by a musical performance.

Each morning begins at 7am with yoga and sunrise meditation. We gather for breakfast at 8am and transition into Inspiration Hall for a 9am start. There will be an afternoon break each day to enjoy lunch, a mountain walk or pure relaxation time.

On Sunday, June 23rd, we'll follow the usual morning schedule, saying our goodbyes by 9am. Shuttle departures will begin soon thereafter.

Thursday, June 20th: Welcome to Peace Village

Arrive at Peace Village Thursday afternoon, check into your room, and take a leisurely walk around the grounds to get to know your surroundings before the summit officially begins at 6pm. We'll gather in Inspiration Hall for a warm welcome to the ivoh Summit and an overview of the weekend. Then we'll enjoy our first delicious vegetarian dinner of the weekend, lovingly prepared by special vegetarian chef. After dinner, we'll be treated to a musical performance before heading off to sleep.

Friday June 21st: Reflection Day

This morning's program opens with a focus on the self — turning inward and reflecting on who we are when we’re at our best, connecting with the values that inspired us to do the mission-driven work in media that we've chosen to do. We'll hear talks from working media people who are seasoned meditators and engage in dialogue, journaling, yoga, reflection, and guided mountain walks.

Later in the day, we'll look closely at the link between our inner and outer lives, and especially at the inherent trauma that can come from our work in media and the challenging state of the world we live in. Our guide here is a trauma psychologist who’s experienced in working with communities and media all over the world.

Saturday, June 22nd: Restorative Narrative Day

Saturday’s topic is Restorative Narrative, conceived and defined by ivoh and refined over the past 6 years, and the focus of a Fetzer Institute partnership for ongoing development and study. We'll start the day with a comprehensive introduction to Restorative Narrative, defining its core elements and how to incorporate it into your work to create stories that inspire, revitalize, and heal.

A diverse group of speakers and colleagues will dialog about their work and its impact of community. Through hands-on workshops and talks, we’ll identify and explore opportunities to apply these principles in your community.

You’ll leave with insights and motivation to tell the deeper stories of the people and communities that experience adversity and tap into their inner-strength and resilience to survive and thrive.

Because of our deep commitment to this work, Ivoh is accepting voluntary contributions to cover our costs of creating the summit: including speaker sessions, workshops, performances, and all other activities. We would welcome a contribution of $100 for your summit experience.

Your host, Peace Village, is also accepting voluntary contributions for both food and lodging, including 3 meals and 2 breaks. (We recommend $100 per day.) Contributions can be made by cash, check and credit card onsite at Peace Village.

Your contributions to both ivoh and Peace Village are tax deductible.

Peace Village is a spiritual retreat center in the Catskill Mountains, and as such the overnight accommodations are modest. Rooms are shared accommodations, en-suite bathrooms and internet access via wifi. If you wish to be assigned a particular roommate, please let us know in advance otherwise you will be paired with another attendee. Single accommodations, in-room televisions, refrigerators, and telephones are not available. Should you require these amenities, there are local bed & breakfasts, motels and campgrounds that we can recommend.

Due to the mountain location, cell phone coverage areas are very limited - although Skype or WhatsApp are great alternatives, if you'll need to make calls, since there's a wifi connection in most rooms. There are also public phones available in common areas.

All meals are vegetarian and prepared onsite. Guests are asked to refrain from bringing alcohol or smoking on the premises. Please help us to maintain this peaceful environment by using headphones to enjoy any music or video in your room.

The Summit begins on Thursday, June 20, with a welcome at 6 pm, followed by dinner and ends with breakfast at 8am on Sunday, June 23. All arrivals and departures must occur within this timeframe, as early arrivals or late departures unfortunately cannot be accommodated.

The transportation hubs closest to Peace Village are Albany airport (ALB) and Hudson, NY train station (HUD). Although participants might find less expensive flights at NYC airports, they are considerably farther away and conference shuttle service is only offered to/from the above locations.

By Train: Please be advised that Fridays and Sundays are peak days on the train and tickets should be purchased in advance on the Amtrak website to guarantee a seat.

By Bus: There is also a Trailways bus from NYC Port Authority that stops in Hunter, NY and drops passengers at the entrance to Peace Village's. For more information, contact Trailways at (800) 776 - 7548.

By Car: Those that wish to drive will find ample free parking at Peace Village and detailed driving directions here on the Peace Village website.

If you are arriving via Albany airport or Hudson train station, it will be most cost effective to reserve a seat on the conference shuttle service. When making travel plans please note that the trip from Peace Village to either destination takes approximately one hour. Uber or Lyft may be sporadically operating from either location but are not reliably available.

Reserve Your Shuttle: Please feel free to contact to book your shuttle before you purchase your airfare/train tickets in order to ensure that there is a shuttle available close to the time of your arrival/departure.

Shuttle service must be arranged in advance, and the cost for this service is $25 per trip, payable in advance.

Please feel free to contact with any questions or if you need help planning your travel to the event.
