Join us for In The Thick LIVE about immigration and the 2020 Election from Jackson at The Alamo Theatre! Award-winning journalists and In The Thick co-hosts, Maria Hinojosa and Julio Ricardo Varela, will be joined by Lorena Quiroz-Lewis, lead organizer with Mississippi Immigrant Coalition and co-founder of Immigrant Alliance for Justice and Equity and Rukia Lumumba, attorney and executive director of the Peoples Advocacy Institute to discuss immigration, criminal justice reform and the Mississippi Democratic presidential primary.

Opening the show will be internationally-touring musician and songwriter, Teneia.

Originally from Jackson, Mississippi, Teneia has six albums to her credit. She has won multiple awards, had her work featured in television and film, and shared the stage with various critically-acclaimed artists.

About the Live Show:

In August 2019, the ICE raids occurred in the state and hundreds of local factory workers were arrested, making Mississippi an important state to focus on in terms of immigration rights and policy. Mississippi has a small (about 2 percent of the population) immigrant community, but it is growing and most (36 percent) are immigrants from Mexico, according to a 2017 report from The American Immigration Council. But at least one third of Mississippi's immigrants are naturalized citizens who are eligible to vote in 2020. The last time a Democratic presidential candidate won Mississippi was 1976 and Mississippi continues to be a strongly Republican state.

Mississippi has a long history of activism around criminal justice reform as a state that has suffered the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. Maria, Julio and guests will discuss how the criminal justice and immigration systems are linked through the private prison industrial complex, and how Black and Brown activists are building power together to promote immigrant rights in Mississippi during this election year.
