Description

Twin Cities Wine Education presents a new class on a very old region

The Wines of Apulia, Calabria, Basilicata, and Campania
Exploring the heel and toe of Italy

It's one of the oldest wine regions in the Mediterranean Basin. The far southern part of Italy is where the Greeks first landed and planted vines, followed by the development by the Romans. Over time, wine regions further to the north started to steal the spotlight, and today if you say "Italian wine" most people think of Chianti and Barolo.

But the vines continued to grow in the southern sections, and the native grapes of the area took on a cult-like following by the locals and were recently introduced to a worldwide wine audience. Today, sommeliers the world over are taking note about the distinctive and rare varieties these regions offer.

This class is about opening your eyes to Italian regions and grapes that you might not know, but hold a very special place in the world of wine.

Join us for an evening exploring the wines, people, food, history, and culture of Apulia (the heel of Italy), Calabria (the toe), plus Basilicata and Campania. We will begin with an overview of the southern half of Italy and detail the history of winemaking in the region. Then we'll explore what has happened in this area post-WWII, and how the slow evolution of the wine styles has led to dynamic and distinctive wines. Lastly, we will profile various wine importers and give you hints for who to look for when shopping for wines such as these.

Get ready for new ideas, new flavor profiles, and new information all about a very, very, very old area.
