Explore the bold geometric design possibilities of fold and clamp resist to make shibori cloth.

About this Event

Explore the bold geometric design possibilities of itagime, fold-and-clamp resist, to easily and quickly make shibori cloth. Learn the basic traditional folds and how you can use different positions of the simple bar clamp to create different patterns. Experiment with instant indigo dyeing with its range of blues from light pastel to midnight depending on the number of dips into the vat. In this class you will make a gradation sample chart using protein fibers and learn how to make your own wooden clamps to experiment with novelty shapes.

Barbara Setsu Pickett is an Associate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Art at the University of Oregon. She has several awards and grants from world known organizations. She and her son, Michael Tadao, formed Mihara Shibor Studio in 2005, where they create textured scarves expanding on traditional Japanese traditional shibori techniques. Michael started indigo dyeing at three years old. He earned degrees in Economics and Business, then started this family business. He has assisted world-renown shibori artist Yoshiko Wada and has gone on to innovate new folds and resist methods.
